The fishing is now starting to pick up after the winter. All though locally the temperatures will need to rise constantly over the next few weeks to see a marked improvement. The low water temperatures mean that the bait fish have not arrived close to shore, thus limiting the sea fishing. Most of the lakes with the exception of Amadario are fishing very poorly. However if you are prepared to travel a bit further a field then great fishing can be found.
This is the time of year for the Pike, and there are fewer places in the region better than the Embalse de Cenajo. Situated near the town of Calasparra, it is around a 2 hour drive from Torrevieja. This Embalse contains Pike to over 15kg, Zander, Black Bass and large Carp. Due to the fact that it is large but difficult to access, it is regarded as one of Spain’s top ten venues.
We have located a new Pike and Carp venue that is equally as good as Cenajo. Presa de Tuos. With a similar driving distance from Torrevieja, this embalse is even more stunning than Cenajo. It also holds a good head of Black Bass.
Most people think that like most types of fishing the Catfish are only active in the summer. On the river Ebro they are active all year round. The added bonus is that at this time of year the Carp shoal up into huge shoals. It is not uncommon to see shoals of 300 or 400 fish all around 20-30lb. large amounts of ground bait are required to keep the shoal in the area.
We have managed to strike a deal with one if the best guides on the Ebro with a worldwide reputation. He is reporting plenty of 100lb plus fish already this month, with a few over the magical 200lb mark.
This is a great time to go as the fishing has suddenly really picked up as the fish aim to put on as much weight for the spawning period.

Fly fishing on the Segura de Elche. This is one of the few areas of river to fish for Trout in the Costa Blanca. The upper reaches of the Rio Segura are not like the slow mud filled water that trickles in the swaps of the lower section. It is a vibrante and sometimes wild water that is full of Trout. |
